In all rooms you will find specially-commissioned artwork by Indonesian-born artist, Susan Olij. Custom created to balance together with the soft furnishings of each individual villa and suite, the rooms act as a gallery for her work. Paintings are available for purchase at the resort.
Artist’s Profile
Susan Olij is an Indonesian-born artist, living and working in Singapore. She has been practising art from a young age, but only began her fine art career in 2003. Her previous training in life art and painting from Singaporean and Indonesian master artists, along with part time classes while living in New York at The School of Visual Art and New York Academy of Art has contributed to her journey as a fine artist.
Susan began with figurative art in early 2003 and progressed through the end of 2005 into abstract figurative and in 2007 she explores abstract expressionism.
Her artworks are expansive in range and constantly changing in style. This has become Susan’s progressive trademark. The paintings commissioned for Saboey Resort & Villas are a mixture of action painting technique and abstract expressionism style, on which she has been focusing in 2007.
Susan is currently continuing a full-time Bachelor of Fine Arts degree at Singapore LaSalle College of the Arts, majoring in Painting.
Statement from the Artist
The Saboey abstract series are inspired by the approach of art making as a moment-capturing opportunity, like a photograph of the spirit of a place.
The involvement of the un-definable is apparent in the abstract works here. A place has an energy, which is captured from the movement of its residence and remnants of the passing trails in the sand. Saboey’s tranquil and decadent spirit is captured at best in this series.
